Our clinical team in Sierra Leone recently faced a significant challenge while travelling to a rural clinic. Their mission to provide vital healthcare to pregnant mothers in remote areas was jeopardised when their vehicle became stuck in mud due to severe flooding.
The all-terrain Land Cruiser, donated by the UK-based Paterson Logan Trust, has been crucial in Maternal Health Africa’s (MHA) efforts to support one of the most isolated districts in the country. The rainy season often disrupts service delivery, making travel difficult and treacherous.
Country Representative Dr Denis Ssekyanzi was en route to conduct MHA’s essential preventative scanning programme in Mala, nearly two hours from Makeni in Bombali district. These scans are crucial for detecting complications early, ensuring the health and safety of both mothers and their babies.
As the team navigated the rain-soaked terrain, their vehicle became stuck. Demonstrating remarkable ingenuity and community spirit, local villagers quickly gathered palm fronds to create a makeshift track, allowing the Land Cruiser to continue its journey.
“Our ability to reach and provide care to pregnant mothers in the most remote areas is paramount,” said Dr. Ssekyanzi. “The events in Bombali highlight the logistical challenges faced by healthcare providers across rural Africa and the profound impact of international support. It is thanks to funders like the Paterson Logan Trust that we can continue to provide life-saving care to those who need it most.”
