On this UN International Day of Charity, we are reminded of the profound impact that acts of giving can have on lives around the world. In the story of Baby Emrakel, we see the very embodiment of charity—the gift of life. Born to 20-year-old Samrin Birhane Abate at our March 8 MCH Center in Ethopia, Emrakel’s name – meaning “a gift” – perfectly captures the hope and resilience that define both his story and the vital work of Maternal Health Africa (MHA).
Samrin’s journey has been fraught with hardship. Displaced from Humera in Western Tigray due to conflict, she has lived for four years in an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp. But even in the face of adversity, Samrin found the care she needed through MHA. Thanks to the free antenatal care she received, Samrin safely delivered her precious son, Emrakel, at the March 8 MCH Center.
“Emrakel is my miracle, my gift,” Samrin shared, cradling her newborn. “His name symbolises the gift of life, and I hope his story inspires others to help mothers like me who need access to healthcare.”
This International Day of Charity, Emrakel’s story reminds us of the immense difference that charity can make. Maternal Health Africa provides crucial medical care, education, and support to expectant mothers in underserved regions, helping to significantly reduce maternal and infant mortality. Yet, the need for resources continues to grow as more mothers face the challenges of conflict, displacement, and limited access to healthcare.
