Maternal Health Africa’s Country Representative in Ethiopa has been honoured with the prestigious Best Performing Physician Award from the Ethiopian Medical Association, recognising exceptional efforts in the war-torn Tigray region. Dr. Hale Teka received the award earlier this year for his significant contributions to clinical service and research. The accolade, presented by Dr. Tegbar Yigzaw, President of the Ethiopian Medical Association, and Dr. Mekdes Dabba, Minister of Health, highlights the charity’s crucial role in addressing the healthcare crisis following the civil war that erupted in November 2020.
Leading the Recovery Through Outreach Project (RecTOR) from July 2022, Dr. Teka focused on restoring essential healthcare services in the most affected areas. The project recruited specialist and resident OBGYN doctors to provide critical emergency services, including caesarean deliveries, saving countless lives and inspiring local healthcare personnel to maintain high standards of care amid the crisis.
Dr. Doug Hawthorn, Founder and Medical Director of Maternal Health Africa, expressed pride in the organisation’s achievements, stating, “This award is a testament to our collective efforts and the impactful work we are doing in Tigray. It inspires us to continue providing vital healthcare services to the most marginalised women, even in the aftermath of a devastating civil war.”
